About the water

Lake Eufaula, officially Walter F. George Lake, backs up the Chattahoochee behind the Corps of Engineers’ Walter F. George Lock and Dam on the Georgia–Alabama line.

It earned the nickname Bass Capital of the World decades ago, and it still produces big largemouth.

What’s biting, season by season

Spring

Bass move shallow to spawn in the creeks and pockets.

Summer

When bass move deep, anglers turn to offshore ledges and drops.

Fall

Bass chase shad back into the creeks.

Winter

Slow presentations on deeper structure.

Tips from the guides

  • Learn your electronics; offshore ledges hold summer bass.
  • Follow the shad into the creeks in fall.
  • Fish early and late when the summer sun is high.

Access & rules

Public ramps and parks are spread around the lake on both the Georgia and Alabama sides.

Check Georgia and Alabama license rules for the side you fish.

A River Through Atlanta guide lifting a big brown trout from a drift boat on the Chattahoochee

From the guides at River Through Atlanta

Eufaula largemouth are the real deal. So are the wild browns on the Hooch.

Below Buford Dam, cold water from the bottom of Lake Lanier keeps 48 miles of the Chattahoochee cool enough for trout all year. It’s western-style fly fishing from a drift boat, for rainbows and wild browns, right through Atlanta. Our Orvis-endorsed guides have fished it since 1994, and beginners are welcome.
