What to bring on a guided fly fishing trip
A simple checklist for your first day on the Chattahoochee with River Through Atlanta.

What we bring
Your guide brings quality rods, reels, flies and the boat, and teaches as you go. Beginners are welcome, and plenty of first-timers are casting with confidence by the end of the day.
What you bring
- Your Georgia fishing license and trout license.
- Layers. The river runs near 50°F year-round, so mornings on the water feel cool.
- Rain gear, even if the forecast looks good.
- Polarized sunglasses to spot fish and protect your eyes.
- A hat and sun protection.
- Water and snacks for the day.
Tips for a great day
- Book a weekday and you’ll have the river almost to yourself.
- Tell your guide your experience level and what you want to learn.
- Ask questions. A day with a guide teaches more than a season alone.
Giving a trip as a gift?
River Through Atlanta gift certificates make an easy present for anglers of every level.

Below Buford Dam, cold water from the bottom of Lake Lanier keeps 48 miles of the Chattahoochee cool enough for trout all year. It’s western-style fly fishing from a drift boat, for rainbows and wild browns, right through Atlanta. Our Orvis-endorsed guides have fished it since 1994, and beginners are welcome.
