The Chattahoochee River is one of the most remarkable trout fisheries in America — not because it’s remote, but because it isn’t. A cold, healthy trout river flows right through metro Atlanta, offering year-round fishing within minutes of the city. This guide covers what makes it special and how to fish it well. For a deeper look at the river itself, see our page on the Chattahoochee River.
A tailwater trout fishery in the city
Below Buford Dam, water released from the bottom of Lake Lanier stays cold and oxygen-rich all year. This “tailwater” effect creates roughly 48 miles of trout water flowing through Buford, Cumming, Duluth, Johns Creek, Roswell, and into Atlanta — supported by thousands of acres of protected national park land.
What fish will you catch?
- Rainbow trout — the most common catch, stocked and holdover fish throughout the system.
- Brown trout — wary and prized; the upper river near Buford Dam grows true trophies.
- Striped bass and shoal bass — seasonal bonus species in the warmer, lower stretches.
Best access points
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area includes more than a dozen car-accessible units. Popular fishing access includes the Buford Dam and Bowmans Island areas up top, Abbotts Bridge and Medlock Bridge in the Johns Creek and Duluth area, and the Vickery Creek and Riverside areas around Roswell. Each fishes differently depending on flows and season.
Understanding dam releases
Because this is a tailwater, water levels rise when Buford Dam generates. Knowing the generation schedule is essential for both safety and success — it changes where fish hold and when wading is possible. This is the single biggest reason first-timers benefit from a guide.
Seasons on the Hooch
Spring brings strong hatches and active trout; summer fishes best early in the morning and from a drift boat; fall turns the brown trout aggressive; and winter offers clear water and consistent fishing. In short, there’s no bad time to be on the river — only different tactics. (See our post on the best time of year to fish.)
