About the water

West Point Lake backs the Chattahoochee up behind the Corps of Engineers’ West Point Dam, about 25,900 acres of water on the Georgia–Alabama line.

Georgia has stocked about 4.2 million largemouth here since 2016. Hybrids are plentiful, stripers can reach 30 pounds, and crappie and catfish round out the lake.

What’s biting, season by season

Spring

The best all-around season: bass move shallow and the crappie bite turns on.

Summer

Fish the bridges at night for hybrids and stripers.

Fall

Bass chase shad into the creek arms as the water cools.

Winter

Crappie and stripers hold deeper. Downsize and slow your retrieve.

Tips from the guides

  • Summer nights at the bridges are prime time for hybrids.
  • In spring, work creek arms and shallow cover for largemouth.
  • Crappie stack on brush and bridge pilings in early spring.
  • Follow the shad in fall. Where the bait goes, bass and hybrids follow.

Access & rules

The Corps of Engineers manages parks and boat ramps around the lake.

The lake crosses the state line, so check Georgia and Alabama license rules for the water you plan to fish.

A River Through Atlanta guide lifting a big brown trout from a drift boat on the Chattahoochee

From the guides at River Through Atlanta

West Point is sick for hybrids. Now follow the same river upstream to Atlanta, where it runs cold enough for trout.

Below Buford Dam, cold water from the bottom of Lake Lanier keeps 48 miles of the Chattahoochee cool enough for trout all year. It’s western-style fly fishing from a drift boat, for rainbows and wild browns, right through Atlanta. Our Orvis-endorsed guides have fished it since 1994, and beginners are welcome.
